A second Richmond-area location of the franchise Experimac, which sells and services pre-owned Apple products, opened earlier this month.

Tim Crum is owner of the new Experimac franchise at 13614 Hull Street Road, adjacent to a Gold’s Gym in the Harbour Pointe Village shopping center in Chesterfield County.

Leonard Blue opened the area’s first Experimac store in April 2016 at 1307 W. Main St. in Richmond.

The businesses also sell new Apple-compatible accessories such as headphones, earbuds and cords.

Blue retired from the U.S. Army after 23 years. Crum, 39, has a background in the food-processing industry.

Experimac was founded in West Palm Beach, Fla., in 2012 by Jim Muir. The chain has more than 100 locations.

“We can take a 2012 computer that has the same specs of the new ones and upgrade it” and sell it for half the price of a new computer, Crum said.

“A lot of the computers we have (Apple) wouldn’t touch because they are older than five years,” Crum said.

Blue said starting a business was something he always wanted to do.

“I’m an avid Mac user, so it was just something that seemed to fit,” he said.

Experimac stores are not authorized resellers of new or used Apple products or authorized repair shops, which means the items or repairs do not come with the Apple warranty.

Experimac stores offer a standard 90-day warranty on products and repairs, according to the corporate website.

A spokeswoman for Experimac said the company eventually hopes to have four to six total stores in the Richmond market.
